What not to wear is a TV show that teaching people what the virtues of their bodies are and how they can expand their virtues by wearing different kinds of cloths. By pointing out what cloths they should wear and what they not to wear in order to cover their defects, those people would change their style and also get a sense that how today’s fashion trend is. This is parts of the popular culture. In today’s society, people are much more care about their appearance, especially their clothing. In different occasions, we wear different cloths. Moreover, the cloths that we wear also reflect parts of our personality and people’s living conditions. For example, people who have good jobs will have more money and are willing to spend on their clothing. Oppositely, people who live in the lower level of the society, we spend their money only on daily necessities.

            Going to the place that relate to popular culture, Millennium Park, we have found the Cloud Gate and Jay PrItzker Pavilion as our objects that relate to popular culture. This exciting trip has gave us a great opportunity of how can we find the things that relate to popular culture in our daily lives. Without taking this classes, I don’t recognize that I should pay attention to the environment that I live in. Also, interviewing people about the popular culture. we see that most people are preferred popular culture instead of high culture. Also, high culture is not being familiar with many people.

Technology

      Computer is something that I cannot live without. I spend almost at least 8 hours every day studying or working with computers. I reply on computers very much. For example, I use computers to check my email, my bills and my financial. The way that I prefer to communicate with people is through email. I believe that this is the safety and fast way to communicate with people because we can always check the email if we want to know what we have told that person or what they have said to you. In addition, form my point of view, I believe technology in importance to our life since everything have based on technology. Computer is a good example. We can see computer everywhere, for example, cafes, schools, and restaurants, these are the places where people usually stay for a long time. Past to the old ages, we might find computers in school, but not really restaurants or cafes. Since the functions of computers have been changed, as a human, we can enjoy the convenience that they have brought to us. Without technologies, I believe people can survive, but it would cause many inconvenience and people’s life would be tough

Titanic (1997 film)

The first movie that I have picked is Titanic. It is a 1997 film by James Cameron. After watching the current movie Avatar, people would get more familiar with his name. Titanic is a romantic movie. I would say it is a classic romantic movie because the director uses the living condition of people in 1912 as the background. The clothes that those actors are wearing and the way that they speak in the movie are very classical. Basically, the movie is talked about two people, Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, who meet on the ship. The boy is from a working class family and Rose is from the upper. Jack has attracted by Rose’s beauty in the first sight. Something has happened and make Rose comes up with an idea of killing herself. However, Jack saved her. They start hanging out. Rose is engaged at that time, but she is not engaged in the relationship that she is having. It is an arranged married. Rose is looking for true love, and she finds that Jack is a right person for her. Eventually, they fell in love with each other. However, something has happened for the ship. The ship starts sinking. People are running around, trying to get on the boat and finding a way to survive. In this scene, you will see different people’s attitudes toward death. For example, the captain is staying in his own room while people are screaming and running around outside. He treats the ship as his body. He wants to die with his ship. Finally, the attention back to the poor couple. Jack has tried different way to survive. However, he has only found a piece of wood, so Rose can get on there and he stays in the water. Finally jack is died in this accident. In general, I like the movie. The storyline is unpredictable, unlike other romantic movie that it always has happy endings.  

      The most recent movie that I have watched is Love & Other Drugs. It is a romantic comedy movie directed by Edward Zwick. One of the attractions of this movie is its main actor and actress, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. They both are the popular movie stars in the United States. Maggie (Hathaway) is a strong girl who does not want people to let her down. She only wants to have short term relationship with all her boyfriend because she believes that eventually those boyfriends will leave her because of her Parkinson. After she meet Jamie (Gyllenhaal) she has found her true love. Jamie is a handsome, good-looking, smart salesman. Before he met Maggie, he doesn’t have a stable relationship. He put his focus on his career and enjoy his life. When these two different people come together, they have addicted by the love between them. At the end of the movie is all about the decision. Does Jamie want to stay with Maggie and take care of her for his entire life? This struggle cause their relationship has changed. However, Jamie made a right decision is to take the responsible and stay with Maggie.       From the review on Orlando Sentinel, it mentions the movie is little bit too sexual. The movie is sexual because there have many scenes that Maggie took her cloths off and audience can see that she is naked. However, in my opinion, I believe it have strength the personality of Maggie in the movie. It makes the audience to get more concepts about how a girl she is. On the other hand, audiences can compare the changes of Maggie’s attitude toward love.

My Favorite type of music –Cantonese Popular Music

      In this Music section, I have picked one of my favorite songs MY WAY by Hins Cheung. Hins Cheung is one of the Hong Kong pop song singers. I found the differences of his songs and others. His songs are trend to have meaning in it. My Way is a good example. It talks about the process of growing up. From a kid to an adult, the process is tough. However, we should learn how to face problems by ourselves instead of depending on our parents.  In addition, another thing that I want to talk about is my favorite type of music – Cantonese Popular Music. One of the features of Cantonese Popular Music is the lyric easy for people to associate with their daily live. Samuel Hui is the founder of Cantonese Popular Music. The language in Cantonese Pop Songs is informal and is close to the language that people speak every day.

This It is a very meaningful song. Hins Cheung put himself as the actor of the song, describing his growing process. Form a little kid, Hins cheung was grown up under his parents’ protection. After he has grown up, he realizes that he has to be brave to face difficulties. The song is also touching to me. I think it matched my growing process. When I was a little kid, I always went to my mom and ask for advises. But when I has grown up, I would like to deal with all the questions by myself instead of going to my parents and ask for solutions. I believe that we all enjoy the time that when we were young. We don’t really have to take care of any troubles; parents would help us to deal with me. When we have grown up, as an adults, parents are no longer become your advisor, you don’t want them to know everything about you because you don’t want them to worried about you. In addition, the song also mentions what we should do what we are facing difficulties. I would eventually find a way to deal with it. We need to be brave. This is the reason why I love this song so much.

Do I Look like Public Enemy Number One?

      I believe the article, Do I Look like Public Enemy Number One?, has reflected some immigrates’ attitudes of their cultural identities. Have been living in the United States for a lengthy of time, I have experienced such feeling. Moving in a new country, as immigrates, in some point, it is necessary to charge the way that we live. For example, learning how to drive, learning a new language and changing our living style. These little things will change the way that you think who we are because your original living style would gradually be forgotten and you pick up the new living style. For example, Chinese, who born in the United States, only speak English and live in American way. How they identify themselves. I have interviewed some Chinese-Americans. Some told me they are American because they don’t know anything about china or Chinese. Some told me they are Chinese because they believe that their cultural identities should be based on their blood relationship. There is not correct concept of the cultural identities. I believe this is all based on the individual’s thinking. In addition, the article has brought up a controversial question. What if your nation is hailed as terrible nation and people start to exclude your nation, do you still believe people will use different point of view to look at you and believe you are the good one in your nations? I believe this is a difficult question for many people. Also, this is what Lorraine Mahia Ali is facing? At the end of the article, Lorraine Mahia Ali has issued his opinion on this situation. After his father was death, he realizes that in order to define our cultural identifies, we should only care about how we view ourselves, not the other because everyone have different opinions on our cultural identifies, we cannot only based on how people view us, we also have to define the identifies by ourselves. Also, we should respect the both side of the cultural. They both would have something that more valuable than others. From my point of view, I totally agree who Lorraine Mahia Ali’s opinion on this situation. It is because of his experience, I have changed my attitude toward my cultural identity.

Cultural Identity

                 Dear All,
My name is Peggy Cheng. This is my poster for the assignment of cultural identity. The reason why I chose American culture for my topic is because I want to share my experiences with my classmates. Since most of my classmates came from different countries, they must have experienced some of the American cultures. So I want to use this opportunity to see will they have the same experiences as me. Let me briefly introduce my poster to all of you. First of all, I separated the poster into sixth parts. The little speech from a young girl is my introduction. The other parts are what I have experienced about the American culture. For example, the picture of the statue of liberty represents of idea of freedom and the picture of American president Obama represents the idea of fair.
